SPAY SISTERS IN KUWAIT
From 13th to 27th of January 2024
WOW, what a fortnight and what a welcome and what a weight gain! I can obviously only talk about my feelings but I really enjoyed the trip. It was so wonderfully organised. Suzy had corralled all the animal charities and organised the animals. To add to the numbers Abdullah and Sheikha were out catching stray dogs every night. Sheika, who is the founder and operator of SOULS had organised all the funding and ordering of food and all the staff, publicity and social media. This is being written the day after our return as I am still so excited.
After a couple of flights, we arrived in Kuwait having been told to NOT SMILE at the men in customs and to realise they NEVER JOKED. Abdullah ( our Kuwaiti host ) had done his homework so when we Dom, Marie, Delphine and I were pulled to one side and told to open the brown pull along suitcase aka the drugs bag, we didn’t smile and our hearts did beat quicker in the silence that followed. They opened the bag, they lifted up the T-shirt layer and there were the bottles and bottles of anaesthetics and analgesics. We stood immobile, didn’t look at each other and waited. The customs officials started chatting between themselves in arabic and suddenly with the wave of a hand, they turned their backs and walked off leaving us to replace the t-shirts, zip up the bag and scurry out of customs feeling light headed with relief, with grins on our faces. We were through and there was Abdullah to greet us.
It was early in the morning and we hadn’t slept, the rest of the gang had arrived late the night before. We were driven to the Sahara where we had 2 villas, each with two rooms, a double room and 2 singles. The accommodation was great, a very generous donation, was next to the race track so we could see horses galloping and was cleaned daily. We were spoilt with bathrobes, and the little bottles of toiletries which we all took home as souvenirs. Suzy had also kindly stacked the fridges with M & S goodies. Who would have guessed that Dominique loved chocolate covered marshmallow teacakes and that they had been called ´Black Woman’s Nipples´in the old days in Belgium.
That afternoon we got shown the RAH 2 (Royal Animal Hospital) which had been built and as yet never used as they can’t find the staff. Vets and nurses, a wonderful opportunity awaits you if you wish to go and work there for a while. This was were we would be working and Suzy had organised another great idea…. we would all just operate on 2 dogs each so that we could feel our fingers and get over our nerves before the following official first day where the animal hordes were expected. So Marie and Delphine prep’d and Jill, Dominique, Amita and I operated. Amita was delighted she could still do it!
Suzy’s skill at the anaesthesia, cannot be underestimated as she knocks the animals out and then rushes around at our screams of TOP UP as occasional animals start twitching mid op! Tahani, Suzy’s side kick was also fantastic in charting and noting procedures, helping with day off chauffeuring, inviting us to her house one evening and letting me ride her horse. The French girls provided us with interesting music whilst prep’ing the animals and avoided us having to castrate many cats. Siva, William and Nicola, nurses from RAH 1also spared a day to come and lend a hand, which was kind. Tone flew in for the time necessary for us all to remember why we loved her before dashing home for Robyn, her daughter.
Needless to say the days whizzed past as we were doing big numbers. You get into a routine, your table becomes your area, your place. The animal in front of you changes but beyond cleaning your kit between animals you stay still. The music plays in the background, with or without accompanying dogs barking. It is challenging to concentrate for long periods of time. An excellent element of working in a group, is when it starts going wrong or you need a hand it is there, usually in the form of Jill. We did also notice and would like to THANK the other vets that came in from the RAH 1, for a day or 2, Nuria and Gino from Spain, Angelo from Italy and Tamara from Kuwait, to help. They added to the multicultural feel.
I gave myself the mission of teaching Karam, Ihab and Moussa the 3 Egyptian large animal vets to do small animal surgery. This was quite a challenge but as I will be asking them to translate what I am writing into Arabic, I need to be careful what I write! It was even more amusing with Amy (whom we would all like to congratulate because she has just got a surgical residency at the RVC) looking on in despair. However at the end of 2 weeks they could not only clean and sterilise their hands correctly but they could also castrate dogs and do ovariohysterectomies on cats. Personally, I got the opportunity to scream, like I hadn’t screamed for years. At one point, I thought I was having a stroke, my hands started shaking but I think I got my point across ;).
Dominique also needs a heap of praise, she was such a warrior in her endeavours to teach and we thank her for helping us.
Another benefactor and a wonderful evening out was Jill’s friend Sheikh Abdullah who entertained us in style despite our inadequate appearance considering the affluence of the situation. Other people that need to be thanked are all the volunteers who from dawn till dusk cared and tended to the animals pre and post operations.
So the numbers…. We sterilised 931 animals in 9.5 days of work, slept very well at the end of a long day of work because of the pillows and enjoyed every minute of it. For anaesthetics we used, Domitor, Torbugesic and Ketamine. We also used more local anaesthetics than in previous years, finding that 0.2 of lidocaine injected straight into the testicle or ovary reduced the need for GA iv or im top ups.
All looking weary at the end of the fortnight!!
So THANKS again for all your help with this mission, you are too many to name and let’s hope to do it again in the not too distant future….

يا لهما اسبوعان رائعان واستقبال وزيادة فى الوزن لا مثيل لها ، كانت حقا رحلة رائعة وتنظيم أكثر من ممتاز ، سوزى كانت مسئولة عن التنسيق مع الجمعيات الخيرية ، ولزيادة أعداد الحيوانات كان من عبدالله وشيخة يساعدان فى الامساك بالكلاب الضالة يوميا وكل ليلة .شيخة والتى تعتبر مؤسسة “سولز ” كانت المسئولة عنل التنظيم والتمويل و وطلب الطعام لكافة أعضاء الفريق والدعايا ومنسقى التواصل الاجتماعى ، حقا انا سعيدة جدا حتى اثناء للكتابة هذه السطور بعد عودتى .
وصلنا الى الكويت بعد رحلتى طيران و لكنا علىل على بألا نبتسم أمام موظفى الجمارك حيث أنهم لا يمزحون بخصوص عملهم . قام مضيفنا عبدالله بانهاء للكافة الاجراءات حتى طٌلب منا لأن نقوم بفتح شنطة الأدوية لتفتيشها وحينها شعرنا بتسارع بضربات القلب من القلق وذلك بعد أن لوجود الأدوية الخاصة بتخدير بالحيوانات ، وبعد لحظات من المشاورات فيما بين المسئولين باللغة العربية ، طلبوا منا بأن نتابع طريقنا وشعرنا حينها براحة و خرجنا لنجد مضيفنا عبدالله فى استقبالنا لتلحيتنا .
لكان الوقت مبكرا ومن نكن نمنا وباقى المجموعة وصلوا متأخرا بنفس الليلة ، تم اقتيادنا الى صحارا ، حيث وجدنا فيلتين كل ملنهما بهما غرفتان ، اثنتين فرديتين واخرى مزدوجة . كانت منحة سخية حقا وإقامة رائعة ، حيث كانت بجوار مضمار سباق الخيول و كنا نراها يوميا أثناء عدوها ، استمتعنا بمعاطف الحمامات و أخذنا بعض ادوات التجميل معنا كتذكارات . قامت سوزى بملأ الثلاجات بالشيكولاتة و المحليات ،وأحبت دومينيك الشيكولاتة المغطاة بالمارشميلو و التى كانت شبيهة بنوع تعرفه من قبل فى بلجيكا .
بعد الظهيرة ذهبنا لرؤية مستشفى رويال للحيوانات الاليفة 2 ، والتى اكتمل بنائها ولم تبدأ فى العمل لعدم توافر طاقم للعمل بها حتى الان . و لكل الاطباء البيطريين و الممرضين ، انها فرصة اذا رغبتم بالعمل بها لفترة من الوقت . واتفقنا مع سوزى ، مارى وديلفين مساعدتانا ، وانا وجيل و أميتا ودومينيك على أن نقوم بعمل عمليتين لكل منا لكلبين حتى نستعيد نشاطنا ونستعد لآول يوم عمل رسمى بدءاً من الغد ، وحينها لكانت أميتا سعيدة لجدا لتذكرها كيفية القيام بالعمليات مرة أخرى .
لصراخنا حلولها لاستكمال التخلدير اذا م شعرنا بان الحيوان بدأ يستفيق ، وساعدتها تهانى فى تقسيم وتدوين الملاحلظات ، و استضافتنا فى منزلها لليلة ودعتنى لركوب حصانها ، وقامت الفتيات الفرنسيات بمساعدتنا بعمليات الاخصاء للقطط و أسمعونا موسيقى رائعة أثناء العمل . وأما عن سيفا ، نيكولا وويليام وهم ممرضين بمستشفى رويال 1 قاموا بمساعدتنا ليوم لكل منهم . ولا ننسي طون والتى التحقت بنا فى وقت لاحق قبل أن تعود مرة أخرى لابنتها .
لاداعى لذكر أننا سابقا كنا نقوم بعمليات وأعداد أكثر ، حيث تصبح طاولتك هى منطقة عملك يتغير الحيوان فقط من أمامك وتقوم بتعقيم أدواتك الجراحية بين كل علملية . أصوات الموسيقى فى الخلفية مع أو بدون نباح الكلاب . كان تحديا لأن تظل فى كامل تركيزك طوال الوقت . وبالطبع كبرى مميزات العمل الجماعى هو يد العون التى تتواجد دائما ، وفى الغالب كانت جيل المسئولة عن ذلك ، نود أن نشكر كل الاطباء الذين قاموا بمساعدتنا من مستشفى رويال 1 مثل نوريا و جينو من اسبانيا و انجيلو من ايطاليا وتامارا من الكويت ، حيث أضافوا احساسا بتعدد الثقافات .
تعهدت بمهمة تعليم كل من كرم ، إيهاب وموسى وهم أطباء بيطريون مصريون للقيام بالعمليات بالحيوانات الصغيرة .كان تحديا شاقا وسألطلب منهم ترجمة ما أكتب بالطبع .كان اللأمر مسليا بالآخص مع ايمى و التى اود ان نهنئها بحصولها على الاقامة الجراحية بالجامعة الملكية للجراحين مؤخرا . وعلى ارغم من ذلك وبنهاية الاسبوعين كانوا قادرين على تعقيم أدواتهم الجراحية وايديهم و عمل عمليات التعقيم للقطط والكلاب .وبالنسبة لى ، لكان لدى لالفرصة لآصرخ كما لمل أفعل منذ زمن بعيد ، وفى بعض اللحظات شعرت بأن قلبي قد يتوقف و أيدى ترتعش من ذلك .دومينيك كذلك تستحق الاشادة ، يالها من مقاتلة وأشكرها كثيرا لمسساعدتنا .
وكان الشيخ عبدالله صديق جيل داعما لنا طوال مدة الاقامة وقام بمساعدتنا لقضاء أوقاتا ممتعة .والشكر لموصول للكافة مساعدينا من المتطوعين و عملهم الشاق من شروق الشمس لغروبها ورعايتهم بالحيوانات قبل وبعد العمليات .
بنهاية الآمر ، قمنا بتعقيم 931 حيوان ، فى تسع أيام عمل ونصف ، نمنا جيدا بعد نهاية عملنا حيث كانت الوسائد جيدة . للتخدير استخدمنا دوميتور ، تربوجيسيك و كيتامين .واستخدمنا كذلك الكثير من المخدر الموضعى أكثر من السنوات الماضية حيث اتضح أن للحقن 0.2 مل من الليدوكايين بداخل الخصية أو المبيض أكثر أمانا من إطالة مدة التخدير الكلى بالحقن الوريدى أو العضلى .
جميعنا نبدو مرهقين بعد نهاية اسبوعين من العمل الشاق
